Support for Local Moms

playgroup
Being a mom is hard work. So, it is always good to find other moms with whom you can share war stories and show battle scars. Here are just some of the many local groups that offer support for moms:

The Birth Care Network offers a Moms Group that meets the third Tuesday of each month at Babyology at 3934 Dutchman’s Lane from 10:00am-12:00pm. Moms and their young children are welcome.
Mama’s Hip at 1559 Bardstown Road hosts a New Moms Group every Monday and Wednesday from 12:00-2:00, as well as an all-age playgroup on Thursdays at 12:00pm and Fridays at 11:00am.
There are three local MOMS Club chapters. The Louisville East chapter meets the second Monday of every month (10:00am) at Ascension Lutheran Church. The Oldham County MOMS Club also meets the second Monday of every month (9:45am) at St. James in PeeWee Valley. The Southeast MOMS Club meets the first Monday of every month at Hunsinger Lane Baptist Church. All chapters offer playgroups, MOMS Nite Out events, and community service opportunities.
Members of the Mother’s Center of Louisville meet at Hurstbourne Baptist Church once a week for multi-age playgroups. There are also two or three other weekly activities planned for moms and children.

A {Grand} Baby on the Way

31 weeks (2)TFblog
To some, this picture might resemble a newly-discovered galaxy, or maybe that solar storm we’ve been hearing about lately. To our families, however, it really IS a picture of a little bit of heaven. We are counting down the days to the birth of our third grandchild — my son, Ryan, and daughter-in-law, Kiara’s first child. This is the baby’s ultrasound at 31 weeks. Isn’t she beautiful?

Watching my youngest son becoming a parent, I am reminded of his baby- and toddlerhood. The constant mischievous twinkle in his eyes kept us on our toes. He was always on some over-the-top adventure, which often led to the extreme limits of our patience. As a new Daddy-to-be, Ryan still possesses his youthful playfulness, wild imagination, and energy. Ryan is also a very loving son, and we are looking forward to his qualities of sincerity, respect of others, persistence, and conscientiousness being nurtured in his little girl as she grows. If she also inherits that mischievous twinkle in her eye, too, watch out!

Ryan has chosen his soul mate in Kiara, who is bubbly and vivacious, and also very full of energy. We are extremely happy they have found each other and that they are expecting their first child. They have the baby’s room decorated and ready, and the excitement grows as they have begun their parent-to-be classes this month. Kiara is now on her maternity leave from work.

Stay tuned as we count down the days for their beautiful baby to arrive!

Home, Garden and Remodeling Show

CrowdShotA
Today, we have Tara Brinkmoeller, Director of Public Affairs and Communications for the Home Builders Association of Louisville, sharing some details about the Home, Garden and Remodeling Show presented by Window World that is being held in the South Wing of the Kentucky Expo Center, March 2nd- 4th.

What should we expect to see at the show?
The fun begins at our entrance with one of the most unique garden areas you will have ever seen – that’s because it’s made completely of balloons. We will also have 14 live landscaped garden and hardscape areas for you to enjoy.
You’ll also see hundreds of local businesses displaying the latest and greatest in home improvement products and services. You can participate in free seminars about home improvements, home organization, container gardening and more that will run multiple times throughout the weekend.
We’re taking care of the whole family this year by offering seminars related to pets and pet training, as well as vendors with pet-specific products and services.

Are there any activities our kids will enjoy while we're there?
Since kids 15 and younger attend free with an adult, we encourage the whole family to attend! You and your kids will love the Disc-Connected K-9 Frisbee Dogs that perform on the Logan Lavelle Hunt Disc-Connected K-9’s Stage. These acrobatic and athletic dogs will amaze you with their hi-energy tricks and gravity-defying leaps. Kids can also play in the Fire Safety House and will enjoy our fun, free photo booths sponsored by Boland Maloney Lumber.

Is this show for me even if I don't plan on remodeling my home right now?
It’s always fun to see what’s new in the home products market, and you never know when you may need the name of a good home improvement specialist!  Plus, we’ll have the Window World Cares Orange County Choppers, NASCAR and Indy Stock Car on display, and you have the chance to meet driver John Andretti on Saturday, March 3rd.

Visit Facebook and Like us for your Buy One Get One Free coupon which more than offsets your $8 parking fee! Enjoy a fun-filled day at the Home, Garden & Remodeling Show – you deserve it!

Moms Just Need a Moment

I’ve been a stay-at-home mom for eight years; so I’ve compiled a pretty long list of strategies for maintaining my composure when my kids are balls-to-the-wall bonkers and salsa dancing all over my nerves.

Taking a nature break works wonders for me and my kids. A walk around the block or sitting on the porch watching cars drive by can be just enough to get our minds off the mayhem that was threatening to unglue all of us.

Facebook is a great distraction. I can check in with other adults, many of whom are my mom-friends who are also doing everything in their power to maintain their composure in the face of tyrant toddlers and persnickety preschoolers. It always helps to know you are not alone.

Reading a magazine, drinking a cup of coffee with flavored creamer, calling my mom, flouncing on my bed in a “mommy timeout,” and venting on my blog are other things I do in an effort to maintain my sanity when I feel the weight of the world on my mom shoulders.

Different is Better

different is better calendar
Sometimes, different is better.

I’ve always believed that, even in high school when I didn’t act like it. I had to have the “right” stuff, no matter how absurd. I had to have that silly purse with the wooden handles and changeable covers - Bermuda Bag, turns out it was called - even if it was too small to hold much of anything and hard to carry with a stack of books. I thought I had to measure up outwardly, or no one would care about anything else. When I left for college I learned that Mr. Rogers was right all along: people can like you just the way you are.

And now look at me: I carry an over-sized fanny pack over one shoulder as a purse. I drive the speed limit and stop for yellow lights. I don’t color my gray. I choose comfort over style. This is me. And folks just need to be okay with that.

My firstborn didn’t talk until she was two, but I knew she was above-average smart; she’d talk when she had something to say.

I protected her from criticism and speculation, and a gifted speech therapist taught her sign language. In about a month she was speaking complete sentences. (Turned out she was waiting until she could do it perfectly, a pattern in her life.)

I totally get it when my 9-year-old simply cannot wear a Winnie the Pooh sweatshirt to school. And if a skirt’s the “wrong” length, enough said. And surprisingly, I get very little of that.

Sometimes, different is better. I say it. I believe it. And I’ll keep saying it until they own it themselves.

Train Your Brain

Michelle Wright, center director at the Louisville-Springhurst LearningRx, shares how cognitive skills affect learning.

What can a parent do to help their child who is struggling with their grades?
A cognitive skills assessment at LearningRx evaluates abilities in areas such as auditory processing, visual processing, processing speed, short and long term memory, and processing speed. The results of an assessment can help determine if the grade struggle is due to cognitive skills deficits or behavioral issues. More often than not, students struggle due to cognitive skill weaknesses that are barriers to reaching potential.

Are most schools teaching our kids to be successful learners?
As a former teacher and a lifelong educator, I can say with confidence that schools are working hard to offer students the very best. The challenge lies not in the desire of educators to meet the needs of their students, but rather in the logistics to do so. Classrooms are large and individual needs vary significantly, making it nearly impossible to ensure that every student is a successful learner. Eighty percent of learning or reading difficulties among U.S. students are the direct consequence of cognitive skill weakness. Learning struggles can be overcome through individualized, one-on-one brain training at LearningRx.

What is brain training, and who can benefit from it?
First off, Brain training IS NOT tutoring. It is not content-based, but rather a system of highly targeted exercises used to change the brain’s capacity to think and learn. Studies have shown that intense brain training can increase the IQ an average of 15 points. Strengthening weak brain skills by working on attention, processing speed, memory, auditory processing, visual processing, and logic and reasoning makes learning faster and easier.

Typical brain training clients include struggling students, high achieving students, autism, asperger’s, ADHD, traumatic brain injuries, preschoolers, and senior adults. Nearly 50 percent of ADHD students who complete brain training are able to discontinue medication.

Raspberry Cream Cheese Heart Tarts

raspberry cream cheese tarts
The way to your loved ones’ hearts is through their stomachs. These delicious raspberry cream cheese heart tarts are guaranteed to please everyone from hubby to the wee ones. The best part? The icing has been made from raspberry juice, not artificial red food coloring!

(Makes 10-11 Heart Tarts)
½ Cup Raspberries
¼ Cup Whipped Cream Cheese
1 Tbsp Honey
1 Double Pie Crust Recipe or 1-14 oz Pre-Made Pie Crust*
Water
1 ½ Cup Powdered Sugar
10 Raspberries for Icing or 2 Tbsp Juiced Raspberries
1 Tbsp Milk or Water

1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
2. Place the raspberries and cream cheese in a bowl and using the back of a fork, mash the raspberries with the cream cheese, leaving some pieces.
3. Roll the pie crust 1/4 inch thick and using a heart-shaped cookie cutter, cut out hearts. (If you are using packaged pie crust just unroll and cut out shapes)
4. Place one heart on a lightly floured work surface and top with 2 tsp of thecream cheese mixture in the very center leaving a ¼ inch border around the cut-out.
5. Lightly dip your index finger into a cup of water and “brush” the border with the water.
6. Top with another heart, take the tines of a fork and gently press down the edges to adhere (so the cream cheese mixture stays inside the heart pocket) and with a toothpick, poke some holes at the top of the heart to remove any airpockets.
7. Place on a parchment or silpat lined baking sheet and bake for 20 minutes or until golden.
8. While the hearts are baking, take 10 raspberries, place in a strainer and press down to release raspberry juice into a bowl, should be about 2 tbsp of juice.
9. Whisk in the milk and slowly pour in the powdered sugar and stir to make icing.
10. Take a fork and drizzle the raspberry icing over the hearts.
11. Serve.
*You can use Pillsbury Pie Crusts
**You may also fill the tarts with 2 Tsp of Nutella

And the Title for Miss Whatever Goes To…

Aah, the coveted tiara.  It’s what every girl would love to be adorned with.  It’s something worn by queens and princesses and…
toddlers… WHAT?!

We all know what I’m talking about when the words "toddlers" and "tiaras" are put together.

It’s a phenomenon in this country, and there’s a pretty popular reality show about it airing on TLC, but we want to know what YOU think about it.

Weigh in with your thoughts.  Are they helping or hurting our little ones’ self-images?  Tell us your thoughts on the good, the bad, and the ugly involved in the children’s pageant industry.

Come Home to Barbecue Sandwiches

Although my favorite new kitchen appliance is the electric wok I got for Christmas, I still like to use my crockpot  during this time of year. It is hard enough to get out the door for work and school AND fit in dinner between activities, but this is a easy-to-throw-in-before-you-dash recipe.

Pork Loin Sandwiches with Barbecue Sauce
I put a pork loin into the crock pot. I salt and pepper the loin and cut it in half if needed to fit into the pot. I put 2-3 fresh thyme stems in the pot and about 3/4 cup of water.  I turn it on high and leave it. It can cook for several hours on high - 6 to 8. If you are around to check it, you can turn it over part way through. As long as it has liquid in it, the meat keeps getting more tender. You can turn it down and cook on low for several more hours if you need for it to continue. Break up the meat within the pot. You can serve as it is or have each family member put as much barbecue sauce (our current favorite is Sweet Baby Ray's) on it as he or she would like.

Serve it on thin sandwich buns with fruit and vegetables, and you have a great, warm, welcoming meal.

Do you have an easy crockpot recipe -- share it with all of us!

What to Get Your Valentine

We have some helpful tips from Amy Holley, owner of HolleyWrap, Louisville's Premier Gifting Service.

If you're like me, you think “chocolate” when Valentine's Day comes around.  As a child, a Whitman's Sampler always showed up at our house on February 14th.  It was special … the bite-sized pieces in the heart-shaped sampler were exotic to a Louisville kid growing up on meat and potatoes.   Louisville has lots of entrepreneurs cooking up Valentine goodies these days …

coco's chocolate cafe
Thinking chocolate gifts this Valentine's Day? Consider a visit to Coco's Chocolate Cafe .  Coco's is now sourcing 100% organic, fair trade cacao (chocolate) beans from the Dominican Republic and roasting them to make their own chocolate! The bars are available in 45% Milk chocolate, 65% Dark chocolate, and 73% X-tra Dark chocolate blends, and sweetened with organic coconut sugar. All things chocolate are available at Coco's.

red hot roasters
You might surprise your friends and co-workers with specialty Valentine coffee drinks from Red Hot Roasters, a drive-thru, cash only, location in the Irish Hill Neighborhood. "The Berry Red Hot Kiss" & "Honey, You Can't Handle Me Latte" are on the menu, and don't leave without a few of the amazing Stellar Sweets treats you'll find there.  Stellar Sweets goodies can be found at Day's Espresso and Coffee  in the Highlands, too … the coconut macaroons are fabulous!

Wanna' treat your cherished one(s) to dinner, but still honoring your 2012 BUDGET?  Consider breakfast … make a date with Toast on Market , Wild Eggs, or Lynn's Paradise Cafe.  Most of these local diners offer breakfast cocktails in addition to delicious traditional and eclectic breakfast entrees.
On the other hand, if you're still honoring your 2012 DIET, make a donation to the American Heart Association.  February is 'American Heart Month' - learn more @ www.heart.org

Now, make a list of your Valentines!
