Music to Their Ears

family in music class

Here are Five Ways Parents Can Help Their Children Learn About Music from Music Together’s Kenneth Guilmartin:

Simply sing and dance with your child. The best thing you can do to help set your child on the road to a lifelong love of music is to participate enthusiastically in music activities yourself. Have you ever noticed how instinctively children try to imitate older siblings and grownups? Imitation is an important part of how they learn. Children learn to talk this way, as well as to walk. If you read books, they’ll want to read. If you sing and dance, they will, too.

Family Challenge- Family Dinner

_DSC9303
“What’s for dinner?” Most nights this question is directed at my husband. Unfortunately for him, I don’t cook. For a few years, he held out hope I would change my mind, but 11 years and 2 kids later my specialty remains take-out.

Parent’s Perspective- Part 6

white water rafting
Carrie Vittitoe, parent-writer for Today's Family magazine, gives us her perspective on summer break and getting back into the swing of things in a new school year.

And They’re Off! When I was a childless middle school teacher, I lived for the quiet and ease of summer break. Now that I have three young children and my summers are not quiet or easy, I feel differently. My kids bicker and throw tantrums during the summer months, and I tire of playing concierge for my kids.

As part of our Parent’s Perspective series, Lorie Gant Leitner gives us all some great insight into Getting Schooled – From the Sidelines.

When my son, Noah, started Kindergarten, I was excited at the prospect of attending field trips and class parties; however, other activities ate up my available vacation days from work. I found myself mastering how to prep and participate from the sidelines.

Find a trusty sidekick.
Since I couldn’t attend field trips to the pumpkin patch or children’s hospital...

Getting Vaccinated for Meningitis

Child Getting A Shot
It’s time to get all the details on meningitis from Belinda Stivers, RN, MSN, school nurse, Eminence Independent Schools, and a past-president of The Kentucky National Association of School Nurses.

How does meningitis spread? It’s spread through common daily contact like sharing drinks or water bottles, kissing, and living in close quarters or being in close crowds. It puts otherwise healthy people at risk because it can be spread by doing regular, normal activities.

What are some signs that your child may have it? There are different stages of it.

Parent’s Perspective- Part 4

We can all take some pointers from parent-writer Ideisha Bellamy when it comes to Building Your Network.

On school days at 4:30pm, the school bus unloads a large group of elementary school kids at my house. They arrive chasing each other, laughing, and racing towards our door. Usually, there are three sets of parents standing in the driveway to receive them with smiles.

These kids have developed into a tight-knit group who go to school together and are growing up together. We have built a network of supportive families, and since each school year brings new challenges, it is a good thing that we have each other.

Don’t Forget To Bond
Recently my 13-year-old daughter and I watched home movies from her preschool years. It brought back sweet memories to see how silly we were, just having fun together. Our love for one another was pure and joyful.

Ten years later, not so much!  I realized once she entered middle school...

First Day Jitters

sending your child to school
As a child and as an adult who taught sixth grade students, I never slept well the night before the first day of school. I felt both excitement and fear at what the school year held for me. Now as a mom of a preschooler and third grader, I see my children experiencing those same feelings.

10 Under $10

My business, HolleyWrap, is a gifting service; so I think about gifts at least 10 hours a day. In fact, I'm so busy thinking about them, I forget to give them. Well, that's about to change.

Like you, I routinely wrap up gifts for special occasions, but why not show appreciation and gratitude routinely? I'm not talking about a lot of time and expense either … believe it or not, $10 or less will still send the message you want.
