We're Going to Church

Like most people, when we're on the cusp of a new year, we begin to think about what we could do differently in the coming year, how we could change or improve our lives or the lives of others, and many other impactful resolutions, both big and small.  Read below how one year changed the life of a family and the difference just one year can make.

It has been a year since I started attending Jeffersontown Christian Church with my three children, and with any milestone, I tend to become reflective, pondering how and why Ive gotten to this juncture.

Until Next Year, Little Elf

We know your children will all be so sad to see your family's beloved Elf on the Shelf head back to the North Pole tomorrow night... it will be bittersweet for us, parents, though, as we'll be able to finally take a break from coming up with new nightly shenanigans.

So, to make your elf's exit a little less sad, here's a great idea.

DIY Bookpage Wreath

If you're looking for a last minute, extremely affordable Christmas gift with major appeal, try making a bookpage wreath. It's a great project that anyone can do, and the end result is simply stunning.

Set aside about two hours of your time to make one, and let me tell you, whomever the recipient is of this gift will know it was made with love.  When you spend your time and energy on something special for someone, the gift becomes more than just a material item; it will be an item they will treasure for years.

Go here for the complete how-to.

No More Meltdowns

We often expect the holidays to be a time of joy and peace, but if you have children, you know that an overabundance of busyness, sweets, and toys mean the holidays aren’t always merry and bright.

There are some things parents can do to minimize the likelihood of holiday meltdowns.

  1. Stick (as much as possible) to the routine.  Kids thrive on routine so ensuring they wake up, nap and go to bed at the same time is critical.  Make sure they eat near their usual mealtimes, even if this means giving them a little snack before the big holiday dinner.
  2. Try to keep your disciplinary measures...

    Could Your Husband Do This?

I walk in the back door and the aroma of dinner hits my nose. My husband, Jeremy, is at the stove prepping grilled chicken. Setting down my bags, I sneak a peek outside to a freshly mown lawn. “Mommy!” shouts Lucas, 2, as he runs into the kitchen and gives me a hug. Noah, 7, waves from the living room couch. Have I died and gone to heaven, you ask?

    Her First Trip Home

    “Oh, there’s no place . . . “

It could have been worse.  She could have chosen the college 15 hours away.  The one she did choose is – barring road construction and excessive rest-stopping – about four hours away.

The first time I drove it, I followed AAA’s route through Cincinnati.  Every time since, I’ve taken the bypass, even if it does add 15 minutes to my trip.  Better 15 minutes than 15 gray hairs.

We’ve been up to see her once...

    A College Visit Brings Hope

Road Trip to Visit the Lieutenant Commander in Her New Habitat

“Can you see to drive?” my mother asked me as we pulled away from the dorm, as Amanda waved us out of sight

There must be something wrong with me, because I could.  If I were a plant, I’d be an indehiscent one.  I don’t cry, nor do I split open and spew seeds.

We went up for Amanda’s birthday, her grandparents’ and her sister’s first visit to her campus, for the weekend.

So Many Parties, So Little Time

As soon as one’s child begins preschool, a parent can count on receiving a seemingly endless stream of birthday party invitations from classmates.  Over time, I’ve developed some strategies for preventing birthday party overload.

    The Gift Box
When my daughter began preschool, it didn’t take me too long to figure out that if she was invited to the parties of eight classmates, and I bought each child a $15 gift, I was venturing into 1. serious math and 2. serious budgetary woes.

So I created the gift box.

This Mom Has Only 5 Rules!

Here are some great rules one local, single mom has in her home. You'll find them to be both helpful and entertaining.
    1. Never, ever quit. Lauren wanted to quit dance in third grade, but couldn't because the house rule was that once you started an activity, you must see it to completion for the term. You didn't have to participate in the activity again, but you had to complete the term (year or nine months) for which you had agreed to participate. No ifs, ands, or buts. The only happening that could get you out of the activity was a major illness.
    2. Use public restrooms only if necessary, and if you do, make it quick. As a single mother of both boys and girls...

Fun Halloween Craft for the Kids

The ‘aye’s!’ have it on this — by now, we know what a craft pack-rat Grandma is! To you, it might be a toss-away, but to me, it has a ‘role’ in Grandma’s grand crafting scheme. Or, did I mean…‘roll?’
Here is a fun and functional way to give those used toilet paper rolls we’ve been stockpiling new lives as Halloween decorations.

    • Cardboard toilet paper rolls
    • Orange, black, brown, and yellow construction paper
    • Scissors

    House Rules Made Simple

With the Back-to-School issue being all about rules, we thought you'd like to know the rules that a few of our parent-writers have in their homes.  Enjoy!

At this point in life, our rules revolve mainly around screen time. As the mother of two confirmed vidiots and one adolescent texter, I have to lay down the law in that area. One hour on a school night and two hours on weekends, with mother's discretionary power!

Stupid rules? I've made them. I’ve recanted on more...

    Stop Childhood Obesity Today

Did you know that September is National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month?  More than 23 million children and teenagers in the United States ages 2 to 19 are obese or overweight, and it is our job as parents or caregivers to guide our children towards a more healthy lifestyle.

A great way to start is by providing them with healthy foods to control hunger between meals.

    Here's a helpful snack guide...

Yelling is as Hurtful as Hitting

A new study about yelling came ouby researchers at the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Michigan.  They found that yelling at a teen can have the same negative effects as physical discipline.

Those negative effects can be depression, low self-esteem, risk of aggression, and overall feelings of being worthless and useless.

With that being said, we all want to avoid damaging the identities of our youth.

Is a "Gap Year" Right for Your Graduate?

“Princeton encourages it. Harvard’s a big fan. From Tufts to MIT, some of the most prestigious universities in the nation are urging students to consider something that would make most parents cringe: The idea of putting off college for a year in favor of some much-needed downtime,” wrote Danielle Wood in an article devoted to the “gap year” and its potential benefits and downfalls.

We want to know your thoughts on this. Would you encourage your high school graduate to have a "gap year?"  Yes or No?

    Precious Peanut Goes to College

It’s a buzz-phrase at our house, a morality tale of what NOT to do.  Do NOT write something embarrassing – such as “Precious Peanut Goes to College” – on your rear window when you take your kid to move-in day.

I took my kid in August.  I didn’t write anything on my window, spill food on myself, or fall down.  We didn’t wrangle over how to set up her half of the room.  I didn’t wrangle with her roommate’s parents, either!

I over-think things, and so far I’ve thought of LOTS of emotional trap doors and pitfalls possibly awaiting me, so if they arose, I could recognize them and plow forward without falling in.  For example...

    College Isn't For Me

Many parents receive calls from their college freshman saying things like, "I think I should transfer to another school, or try something different, or... [fill in the blank]."

Sometimes the issues the college freshman faces seem insurmountable, but trust me, they can be overcome. In order to deal with these issues, parents and students alike must be willing to get to the root of what is causing the problem.

    Here are five tips:

    1. Question your student about the issues that have prompted his desire to leave college. Ask questions about social and environmental issues as well. Sometimes there are concerns with other students (peer pressure, fraternity/sorority, bullying) and professors (class size, difficulty of classes, class load, homework assistance) that cause students to question their presence in college and their ability to succeed.
    2. Have a candid conversation about your student’s gifts and talents and...

Are You the Family We’re Looking For?

Every family is unique, but for the In Our Family feature, I’m looking for families that live life a little differently from the rest of us. I know I’ve met a family I’d like to feature when I’m overwhelmed with curiosity or have to fight back the urge to ask incredulously, “How do you handle THAT?”

When I’m on the hunt for such families, I put a call out on my Facebook page asking folks I know if they know a family that fits the bill. When I asked around for a family-owned business...

Tips for Helping Your Child Be Successful

I figured my August topic – Helping Kids Be Successful – would be easy.  I have two successful kids, so piece of cake, right?  Wrong.

As the deadline approached I realized I had made three highly illogical assumptions:
    1.  That “success” is easy to define and measure
    2.  That what helps one kid helps all kids
    3.  That I had anything at all to do with my kids’ successes

    Oh, the hubris.

Probably the only thing I am sure about,  in terms of my role, is...

The Lure of the Locks- a Trip on the Spirit of Jefferson

In the 1970's, my grandmother worked at the McAlpine Locks and Dam.  Specifically, she handled purchasing for the Corps of Engineers.  That was quite an unusual job for a woman in those days.  But, as a young child, I was only interested in the cool aspects of her job.  For example, when a barge carrying hazardous chemicals got stuck for weeks near the locks, Grandma had to carry a gas mask to work.  The best part?  I got to try it on!

Every time we'd drive along I-64, my mom would point to the drawbridge that connected Louisville to the end of Shippingport Island where the offices were and say, "That's where Grandma works."  You can’t see much from the expressway.  So, the locks were always a mystery to me.

When I found out that the Spirit of Jefferson offered a cruise through the locks...

    Summer Spelling Bees

We are sadly bidding goodbye to the summer of 2013 and *eagerly* turning our attention to the beginning of a new school year. This will be a first for my granddaughter, entering kindergarten. As the days get shorter and our grandchildren’s time more involved with school activities, they will be outdoors less; so, to preserve the memories of our summer fun outside and gain better alphabet and spelling skills, we went on a nature walk to collect the things of summer we cherished. We used these elements, arranged on white paper, and created words!
