Take the Time to Soak It In

Today’s Post from the Pro is a little different.  It is a single, poignant quote from Jennifer M. Koontz, author of the new book, When Your Centerpiece is Made of Play-Doh and the Dog Has Eaten Your Crayons: A Mother’s Perspective on Parenting.

Parenting is a marathon, not a sprint. And especially at the end of a long and tiring day, many times parents feel like they will never cross that proverbial finish line and are still back at start, waiting for someone to tell them “go.” The fact is, parents often don’t take the time to stop and really stand back and soak it all in.
If you remember, the last issue of Today’s Family had the “Sparkle” Family Challenge, wherein Tricia Williams was challenged to do just that… sparkle.  She wrote an accompanying post that focused on really living in the moment and soaking it in while she was doing her best to engage herself more in the lives of the people around her.

It takes a real effort to stop what you’re doing for a moment, whether it be working on the computer, cooking dinner, or running a 3-ring circus (you know exactly what I’m talking about…haha), and really soak it all in.  Sometimes what you soak in might be a messy playroom, a kitchen with Cheerios all over the floor, children hanging from the chandeliers, or a living room filled with flour (I hope that never happens to any of us like in the picture above!), but that’s life, and it’s such a blessing.

So, try it out, and “really stand back and soak it all in.”  Life is too short to not appreciate every moment.

  1. Love that title - worth the price of the book, I bet.
