5 Tips for Hosting an Oscar Party

We have some great tips for hosting an Oscar party from LaDonna Kennedy, parent writer for Today's Family.  Even though we're only about a week away from the Academy Awards, you still have plenty of time to call a few friends and throw a fantastic Oscar party. Here's how she does it!

I adore everything about awards season. I relish in seeing what and who everyone is wearing. My favorite show of awards season is by far the Academy Awards. I celebrate by having a few friends over and throwing a wonderful soiree to celebrate each other and all things Oscar. Here are 5 tips for hosting your very own Oscar party.
  1. Plan ahead. Organize your guest list and send out invitations. I utilize www.evite.com for my event. It allows you to track all of your RSVP’s. You can also send messages to your guests.  For instance, you'll want to tell them where to find the movies that have been nominated.
  2. Have a theme. I love an excuse for a costume, and what better night is there for that then the Oscars? My guests are asked to dress as a favorite character from that year's movies. Decorate your viewing area with movie themed items. I tend to use a few banners and movie posters, but try not to go overboard. If you decide to have a few friends over at the last minute, keep it simple. You can have a ,”PJ’s and Pearls Party.” Have everyone come in their PJ’s and fancy jewelry.
  3. Serve an abundance of food and drink. This is going to be a long night, and your guests will need sustenance. Plan to serve heavy appetizers, beverages, and, of course, popcorn and candy. I always make a punch that is easy to serve and goes a long way. A favorite is Silver Screen Champagne Punch (see recipe below). If you are as fortunate as I am, you’ll invite a friend that loves to bake themed cupcakes that are as delicious as they are gorgeous and clever.
  4. Play some games. You can download a ballot here. Ask each guest to bring their completed ballot. You may also play Oscar Bingo, found on Pinterest. I have also played, “Name that tune,” using songs from that year's movies, search iTunes for current songs.  Another favorite is to have each guest randomly draw a couple of nominees, and the guest holding the winning nominee gets a prize. Be sure to have some great prizes on hand. I always include movie tickets, popcorn, and candy in my prizes and favor bags.
  5. The love is in the details. Strive to let each guest know how much you appreciate that they are there. Personalize the party favors, and take pictures of each guest. You can make a slide show after the party to send each of them as a memento of the evening. I truly love Oscar night because of each of my guests that share it with me.

Silver Screen Champagne Punch

In a blender, combine pink lemonade concentrate, pineapple juice, strawberries, and blend until smooth. Pour into a punch bowl. Add vodka and stir to combine. Just before serving, pour in champagne.
