Here's a fun, family-tested vacation to Wisconsin that's approved by the Seckman family. Plus, read more about this trip in our magazine.
Destination: Washington Island (598 Miles)
Where to: Washington Island, WI (part of Door County, WI)
Mode of Transportation: road trip, vehicle ferry across Lake Michigan
How long: 11 hours
How many days: one week
Those involved: 2 adults, 2 kids ages 5, 8 (we’ve also had giant family reunions there)
Location Stayed: rental cottages
Overall feel: You’ve just escaped the hectic screen-filled, humid mainland to a quaint, clean northern paradise.
Great place to eat: The Albatross Drive-in is a flashback burger and ice cream joint. Best shakes ever, and the Alby-burger is to die for! Beware: nothing about this fast food is fast.
Advance Planning Needed: Since Door County is a popular northern vacation spot, advanced planning for a cottage is necessary. Last year, we were very happy with the Jackson Harbor Inn.
Humorous Moment: Every year we end up adopting the Washington Island accent. I become “Meg” and my husband becomes “Bill” and we sound like the traveling polka team in Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. The people are friendly; you must give a one-hand wave to everyone you pass on the road, if you want to feel like a local.
Megan M. Seckman lives in Louisville with her husband Billy and their kids William (9) and Nadine (6).
