Gobble Up These Sweet Turkey Treats with Your Kids

My 10-year-old daughter Carly and I love to bake together. Mind you, I am not really a baker, or much of a cook at all, but she has shown great interest and I want to encourage her. We were roaming the aisles of Meijer over the weekend gathering Thanksgiving ingredients and were handed a holiday booklet full of recipes and coupons. Immediately Carly found these cute little turkeys we had to try. They are super easy and fun to do together (somehow handfuls of stray candy corn ended up in our mouths instead of on the cookies).

Give these a try with your kiddos! It gives them a fun dessert they can proudly display to friends and family on Thanksgiving day. Carly took hers to a potluck dinner at church and shared the rest with her teachers.

Turkey Cookie Treats
1 pouch sugar cookie mix
1/2 cup butter or margarine, softened
1 egg
1 container (12 oz.) whipped chocolate frosting
Candy corn
1 tube yellow decorating icing
1 tube black decorating gel*
mini candy-coated baking bits*
* We actually purchased candy "eyes" instead of using the mini candies and black decorating gel.

Follow directions on the sugar cookie mix packaging. Drop dough by rounded tablespoonfuls, 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheets.

Decorating: Spread chocolate frosting on cookie, and add candy corn for feathers. Pipe yellow icing for beak and feet. Add baking bits for eyes; pipe black gel for center of each eye. (We found piping icing that thin and small to be difficult, so we cut the yellow portions of candy corns into thin strips for the feet and the white portion of candy corns into beaks.)
