What To Do This Weekend

Leaves are changing color, it's going to turn (a little bit) cooler this weekend, and we have some fun opportunities for your family to spend some quality time together this weekend. The Jack O' Lantern Spectacular in Iroquois Park wraps up, or you can learn how to build a campfire in the woods, catch a play, or enjoy listening to music from a galaxy far, far away.

Check out all of these fun events and more below:

  • Get your Family Outside X-ploring Jefferson Memorial Forest in Fairdale, Kentucky, as the leaves have almost all fallen and the animals are preparing and storing their food. You will learn how to make fire with flint and steel and build a campfire to make s’mores.

  • Take the kids to Churchill Downs for Family Adventure Day, a day of racing and family activities including pony rides, inflatables, petting zoo, stick horse races in the Paddock, face painting, a Thanksgiving craft activity, and more. UofL Basketball players will also be on hand for a meet & greet.

  • Enjoy a family friendly celebration of the Day of the Dead at the Republic Bank First Friday Hop event, which includes downtown art galleries, retailers, and restaurants featuring extended hours with specials/discounts and refreshments. Marvel at fire performers and flamenco and folkloric dancing, check out a Sugar Skull and tissue flower workshop, sip hot chocolate in the traditional Aztec and Mayan style, and more. Costumes are encouraged!

  • Climb on a wagon for a Fall Harvest Hayride through Lapping Park in Clarksville, Indiana. Make a stop at the lodge and warm up by the campfire, roast marshmallows, and take part in fall-themed games and activities. (Hot dogs, soft drinks, and hot chocolate will also be available for purchase.) The fee to participate is one unexpired canned good per person, to be donated to a local food bank.

  • Celebrate Principal Pops Conductor Bob Bernhardt's 35 years with the Louisville Orchestra at Star Wars + More: Music of John Williams at the Kentucky Center. The conductor will share some of his favorite music by composer Williams, including music that any Star Wars fan would enjoy.

  • Give back as a family by taking part in Brightside's Community-Wide Planting Day, a fall planting event held in the Parkland neighborhood. Volunteers of all ages are welcome to help plant approximately 120 trees on Virginia Avenue from 26th to 28th streets.

  • Only three more chances to see The True Story of the Three Little Pigs at Derby Dinner Playhouse in Clarksville, Indiana. You get to be the jury as the Big Bad Wolf goes on trial in this clever musical based on the best-selling book. (Next up at Derby Dinner: Once Upon A Snowflake starting November 19.)

Have a great weekend!
